Aura Parker

Aura Parker is an exciting new voice in children’s picture books. Her work is whimsical and full of details to pore over. TWIG, Aura’s first picture book as writer and illustrator about a stick insect on her first day at Bug School is a 2017 CBCA Notable for Early Childhood. COCOON touches on resilience, independence and the wonder of life cycles, followed by a bunch of cheeky meerkats for MEERKAT SPLASH, which was on the CBCA Notables for 2020. Aura’s latest book is GOODNIGHT, GLOW WORMS about a bunch of cheeky glow worms who can’t switch off.

Specializing in K-2, Aura shares her enthusiasm for drawing, writing and reading in visual literacy presentations and guided illustration sessions. Students enjoy storytime, as well as an introduction to the writing process and coming up with ideas. Aura shows rough sketches and storyboards illustrating the evolution of a story from concept to finished book. Kids join in for a guided illustration session and learn how to draw her picture book characters. Students gain an insight into character design, use of colour, gesture, body language and how this contributes to the storytelling and interplay of words and pictures. Aura sometimes brings along real stick insects for show and tell at the end of her visit. In 2020 she introduces her interactive story-building dice, adding fun and challenge to her presentations. She is also available for illustration sessions with upper primary grades and Year 7-8 on storyboarding, visual literacy, the publication process with more in-depth detail about her art practice and building an illustration portfolio.

Aura illustrates in watercolour, coloured pencil, pen and digital at her studio in Sydney. She has a background in design and regularly exhibits illustrations, screen printed art and handcrafted textiles. Aura Parker’s books and presentations inspire imagination, courage and confidence in young readers.
